Question
I am picking up a 6 week old chocolate lab tomorrow.  He is 5.5 lbs.  does this seem small?  Another breeder said her chocolates were 10lbs. at 6 weeks.  I will be taking him to my vet but I wonder if I should consider a different breeder.
thanks

Answer
That seems small.  Also, 6 weeks is border line early to remove a puppy from its mother and litter.  7-8 weeks is the best time, the puppy has had time to learn doggy etiquette, and is now ready to explore a new world and accept its environment.  This doesn't sound like a good breeder.  I wonder about the second not questioning the 6 weeks.

Puppies are expensive and time consuming.  Poorly bred ones are difficult to socialize into nice dogs.  If you are looking for a companion, you might do better to look at a rescue.  These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them.   Most of them are pure breds and some are registered.  You may find a rescue near you starting at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm  The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
