Question
I am from the Philippines, a tropical country, and I own a 3 month old Golden retriever.  I noticed a few days ago that my puppy is starting to shed.  Is this normal at this age? Since we dont have the same kind of season in temperate zones, does this have an effect on shedding?  Thanks alot...

Answer
Puppies have a shorter, fluffier coat at first.  Your puppy is replacing it with an adult coat.  The new coat should be longer and curlier, the classic Golden Retriever.

Even dogs that are not outside much here where we have cold winters shed spring and fall.  They just do not grow as thick of a coat as the dogs that are out in the cold very much.  A dog will grow as thick of a coat as it needs.  Even with a thin coat, heat is hard on dogs.  Most retrievers like to swim.  If you can't let it swim, you can sprinkle water on it to help keep it cool.  Make sure it has plenty of water to drink too.
