Care of Pomeranins

Question
Is it appropriate for a pomeranian to be kept primarily out of doors in Oklahoma where the summers can be very hot and the winters about average. My granddaughter has just obtained a pom and her mother insists the dog must be kept out of the house. This is a concern to me since I don't think of poms as being outdoor dogs.

Answer
Hi Hannah,

You are absolutely correct.  For one thing, summer's are brutal for a pom.  Also, it's not really safe for them considering their small size.

Poms are not outdoor dogs.  They are bred to be companions and want/need to be with you.  All dogs are pack animals and need to be with their pack.  Isolating a dog from the pack can, and often does produce behavior problems.  Some of those problems include digging, barking, hyperactivity, excessive licking, and chewing.

Feel free to write again.

Carrie
