Pom Eating Behavior

Question
Hello,

I have a 4 year old Pom and she tends to only
eat dry kibble if its is crushed and mixed with
canned food or chicken/green beans, etc. Why does
she behave like this? If I fix her dry kibble with
chicken or green beans, she will lick everything
but not eat the kibble. She does get into the
cat's dry food at times and will eat dry kibble
if I hand feed her. I've tried different dry
foods. Any suggestions? Teeth problems has been
eliminated.

Also, is it possible to feed dogs to much meat?
Such as chicken, ground beef, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Betty

Answer
Hi Betty,

What brand of kibble are you feeding her?  Of course she likes the canned and fresh food better--both are better for her.  Fresh food is the best for dogs, just like it is for people.  Meals should consist of approximately 50% meat.

Why don't you feed her human grade canned foods such as:  Petguard, Wellness, Innova, California Natural, or Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Soul, etc.?  You can add fresh foods like beef, chicken, fish, cottage cheese, yogurt (without added sugar), cheese, brown rice, oatmeal, eggs, veggies, fruit, etc. (I never feed my pom junk food or anything with refined processed sugar.)

Or you could prepare a homemade diet for her.  You can find books at the library on how to prepare homemade recipes for you dog.  I started cooking for my pom a month ago.  After much research on dog nutrition, I have created my own recipes.  I make enough for two weeks and freeze it in individual servings.  My pom loves my cooking!

Let me know if you need more help.

Best Regards,
Carrie
