house breaking

Question
I got an 7 month old Pom from a local rescue. He is a doll, but housebreaking has been very challenging. We're making good progress but he urinates in his crate during the day when I'm at work. I limit his water without success. It's 71/2 hrs. I know he can hold it as he does all night when he sleeps in my bed (I just started this as he piddled in the night in his crate also). He seems to have seperation anxiety.Throws a fit when I leave. I leave a towel in the crate to absorb it as he wet his bed when it was in there. Any suggestions? My next step is to take the towel out and make him sit in it all day but that seems cruel. He has a german sheperd as company (they are good friends). Thanks for any help._

Answer
There are gobs of links and helpful hints in the archives for just this problem. :o)  7 months old is still young.  It takes LOTS of time with your pup to teach them potty training.  And being locked up 7 1/2 hrs during the day and then all night is too much.  Leaving him in an uncushened wet space because he can't hold it is not right either and finally... limiting his water intake can be harmful to his health.  He needs to have access to water at all times as well as food.
You may want to try keeping him in a small area during the day with a litter box or potty pads so that he can play and eat and drink while you are away.

Best of luck.

Patience and consistency is key.
