My new Pom

Question
I just adopted a 9 month old Pomeranian from a rescue. He weighs 9 lbs. The woman I got him from said his mom was 5 lbs.  All the info I have been reading says their weight ranges from 3-7 lbs. Now my friends are saying he isn't a pure Pom. Not that this matters to me but I know I read that they can get as much as 10lbs. What is the answer.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Doris,

Your friends don't know anything about poms!  Poms orginally weighed around 30 pounds and were bred down to the smaller sizes we have today. Show breeders try to breed as close to breed standard as possible which is 3-7 pounds.  (The ideal weight is 4-5 pounds.)  It is not uncommon to see poms that weigh as much as 20 pounds.  These poms are usually bred by backyard breeders.  Backyard breeders know very little about their dogs and are not trying to improve the breed.  Nor do they care about the breed standard.  Your dog is most likely a pom--but I would have to see it to know for sure.  You will really enjoy your pom.  They are intelligent, loving, happy, and an excellent companion.

Enjoy your new puppy!
