Question
QUESTION: I have an American Bull Dog named Paige. Paige is about 6 years old. She is the past year has had what appears to be a rash or skin irritation, it is really red some spots she scratches till it bleeds, her hair is thinning in that area. We have taken her to the Doctor, they tested her for tyroid, as well as tested a piece of the skin, and came up with nothing. Any suggestions? Have you heard this from others?

Hi Katy - POOR Paige, Yes, we see this often.  Here are some suggestions for you to try:  Most of my suggestions do work well for my bullie clients.

1.  Place Paige on a good Probiotic- Here is one that we love !!!
Flora Force - give 1 per day - LONG term - at least 4-5 months.
LOW cost -  ( 26.00 gives you "3" months of this Probiotic)
http://www.mynsp.com/nuvetpetnurse/products/guide.aspx?stockNum=4080

2.  NuVET wafers are a must for this gal!!  NuVET will help to re-build her immune system and it is an allergy fighter... NuVET will help with Environmental allergies and food allergies.
NuVET is purchased thru Holistic vet offices and the Holisitic Manufacturer here:  1-800-474-7044  ORder today and you will have it in 3 days..... Tell them Pet Nurse Marie Peppers sent you.
http://www.nuvet.com/81098
Use order code 81098 when you call in and ASK for the 15% off program.
Your baby will need 1 1/2 wafers per day - Most dogs just take 1 per day of the NuVET Plus wafer / I would like you to take 1 1/2 per day for at least a few months - you may be able to drop down to just 1 per day.
A 90 count bottle is 55.00  Then, ( minus the 15%)
Call in the first order.... Ok.
?????

3.  Please pop her onto some ESTER C ( 500 mg ) per day - Long term-
MUST be the ESTER C - any vitamin store should sell this.

4.  Vitamin E - Give 150 IU ( 1) per day for 30 days - then just 1 every Other day....long term.
VERY safe...

5.  We may need to change her to a grain free food - what is she currently eating????
snacks?
I like this program : SoJo's Green bag .... you just add your own home cooked meats: see Here:
http://www.sojos.com/index.aspx?affiliate=petnurse
GREEN bag is the grain free one :
Also, they make a nice Cherry grain free doggie treat..

Hi Katy and bullie kid!  Glad you are using the NuVet Wafers - You can place her on 2 wafers per day and then go down to 1 1/2 per day.
Many dogs get away with Just One wafer per day - But with her environmental allergies she may need more NuVET than the average dog.

As for the Probiotic - can you open it up and hide the particles in the food?  The Vitamin C may be crushed and placed into some Activia Yogurt... Many bullies love a little bit of Yogurt.

As far as food - Can you find the Wellness CORE or Innova EVO-
If you can just do a 50:50 mix of the old food and new food for 1 month.
After that, can you place her on the Innova EVO or Wellness Core ?

If you can't afford the 100% new food - then, just do  a 50:50 mix long term.  ( EVO and CORE are grain free )
I sure do understand costs!

The most important thing is the Probiotic ( Flora Force) and the NuVET wafers....

Also, if she is very red and swollen, you can give 25 mg of Benadryl every 8 hrs - MOST vets will refer you to Benadryl.
The NuVET should kick in within 2 - 3 weeks.
Natural Supplements take longer to work because they are mild and safe.
Drugs work quick because they are more complex and harsh.

As for treats?  Can you give her some Canned green beans - 1/2 cup with 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil - Make sure you rinse the green beans - or buy the No added salt.
You can also do green beans and 1/8 of a teaspoon of garlic powder- YUM YUM - filling and not many calories.

Also, you can give some Yummy Chummies / Salmon treats - any kind of treat that is GRAIN free
Yummy chummies is a dry salmon cookie.

BEST wishes....
