Question
I have a New puppy.  She is 3 months old.  Have you ever heard of a Boston's ears turning backward instead of forward?  This is not a problem because she is a joy but I have never seen this on any dog.

thanks, Donna

Answer
Hi Donna.  Yes, I have known several cases where the ears on a Boston puppy turn backward.  You can purchase ear stays from your vet, or you can do it yourself.

Simply place a shirt stay (or a popsicle stick cut to 1 - 1-1/2 inches) and place tape (the white kind used for bandages) around the tape.  Then tape the wrapped stick inside the top flap of the ear and tape around it - making a cocoon like wrapping around the ear.

Your puppy will end up looking like Rudolph, and will shake his head for the first hour or so, trying to get his ears free, but he will soon become accustomed to the strange feeling.

Change bandages as they get dirty, and in a couple of weeks the cartilage will harden and his ears will stand.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to assist you with your question.  Please do not hesitate to contact me again if you have additional questions.  Sincerely, Penny D.
