boston terrier sick?

Question
QUESTION: My girlfriend and I just got a an 11 week old boston terrier.  The cutest thing
I've ever seen before! hah  He was delivered to us by puppy carrier from Utah
to Brooklyn, NY.  He seemed super excited to see us when we picked him up
and healthy as a ox.  The first 2 days we had him everything seemed normal..
but now he's appears sick.  His symptoms are diarrhea (which came first),
occasional vomiting, and his nose is runny.  It seems he's having a little
trouble breathing cause he often exhaled hard, just like a human would do
when the cant breathe out of their nose, and he blows little snot bubble... lol
its cute, but I feel bad for him and afraid he cant breathe well.

He's not eating a whole lot of his puppy food but seems to be interested in
human food. .. of course we haven't let him have any of that though.

The puppy food is name brand Hill's Science Diet Puppy Small Bites.  Maybe
name brand isn't always the best choice?

He was vet checked before sent and we have all the papers that say he's
healthy.  I read that a change in environment or excitement or in food can
cause some of these symptoms but since he has all three, I thought I'd ask.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your time!

ANSWER: Hi Devin:  I would get this little one to the VET ASAP.  Things can change over night after a transfer by airplane.  I hope all will go well for you... Just need to have the vet take a look at him.  He could dehydrate very quickly and die... There is no other way to say how serious it could be.

After you see the vet, if all is well....Please e-mail me and let me know what the Diagnosis is.

We can talk food and supplements after he gets to the vet for the check-up.

Please don't delay.

Good luck

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hey Marie,

Sorry it's been a delayed follow up.  We took our Boston Terrier to the vet and
they initially diagnosed him with an upper respiratory infection.  But, after 5
days of treatment, there was no change in his breathing and/or noise running
and actually it seemed to get worse.

So we took him back and they took an xray of his lungs and diagnosed him
with pneumonia. And the vet prescribed and cough syrup type stuff for him to
take twice and day over the next 10 days.  Also she wanted us to steam up
the bathroom and place him in there and pat on his lungs with both hands to
get him to cough up stuff.  (I've tried this a couple of times but I haven't
gotten him to cough while in the steam.)

He's still eating which is good, but has watery poo do to his new canned food
they gave him because he wasn't eating his hard round puppy food.

I've been giving him a little cap full of NutriCal  everyday to help him with
energy.  All he does is sleep.. which I hoping is a sign of his body using his
energy to fight off the infection.

He's still taking short hard breaths which worries me, but I know it's hard for
him to breathe.

Any experience with this and how long it might take for him to give signs of
recovery?

Thanks for all you help.  It's really been appreciated.

-Devin

Answer
Devin, Glad the vet too the x-rays of his little chest!  When you do the Chest Physical Therapy just cup your hands and pat the area.  It does help to loosen any secretions in the lungs.  He may not cough up anything but it is helping.  Keep it up.  He may not like it but it  works wonders.

Next, yes he is sleeping because he is using that time to get better.  Also, the breathing makes him exhausted because of all the energy it takes.
You sould get some canned pumpkin to help with the loose poops.
2 teaspoons 2 x per day of Pure Canned Pumpkin will help and give him some calories, too.
