Kitten suddenly not using litterbox!

Question
Hi, and thank you for your time.

I got my 3 month old kitten towards the end of July. He was using the litterbox just fine the whole time, until yesterday. About a week ago, my mom got me a new litterbox for him that comes with a cover and a door because my room was smelling. (He has to stay in my room.) The night when I first got it, I taught him how to go in and out of the door. He was using the new litterbox for about a week and I was cleaning it out everday. But yesterday, my room was smelling and a found that he pooped in this random spot in my bedroom. I moved his food over to where he pooped, hoping that he wouldn't go there again. But then this morning while I was getting ready, he pooped in almost the same exact spot, just a little bit away from the food. I don't understand why he's not using the letterbox! Please help!

Answer
Hello Arielle,

Your kitten is still very young he is bound to have some accidents at this age but you are right to try and nip it in the bud.  How old was he when you first got him?  It sounds like he has been with you for a while allready and was likely taken away from him mom before she had completely litterbox trained him.  You first need to take the cover off the box, a lot of cats don't like these covers as it is a bit scary for them not to be able to see what is going on while they go to the bathroom.  Using the box is a very vulnerable time for the cat and I believe this will solve your problem.  You can also try to get some 'Cat Attract litter"  But try taking the cover off first.
