A bad habit?

Question
I have a 16 mnth DSH neutered male. A couple of weeks ago, he had diahrrea and went downstairs at the perimeter of the living room (since I have 4 cats; I have 2 large litter boxes
upstairs, cleaned every other day).  He has since kept doing it. I cleaned all areas well; and used a LOT of odor neutralizer on each place each time. I took him to the vet, no answer there.  No more diahrrea, but still wants to poop around the perimeter. Is in a bathroom by himself now and uses cat box, but not if let out. Bathroom is temp, any suggestions to re-train him correctly?

Answer
Jen,

I will list a couple of things you might try, but, I am also going to send you a link to a very good article on housesoiling problems in cats written by a vet who is also a cat
breeder.

I am assuming you used an enzyme based product to neutralize the odor like Outright or Simple Solution (available from your friendly neighborhood pet supermarket).  If not, I would get some and try it.

Next, I would try putting tin foil in places where this cat is pooping inappropriately.  You will have to batten it down in some fashion.  Cats tend to hate tin foil for peeing or pooping.

You can try cat repellents, but I have not had much success with these.  Your vet may have something newer which might be worth a try.

Outside of these, I have no further ideas.

Good luck & best regards... Norm.
