my new cat is terrified of me

Question
I adopted a new female cat  four days ago. She's a year old and very skittish. Yesterday was the first time since her arrival that she ate anything or used her litter box, which I found to be rather alarming. She's terrified to be in the same room with me, and any attempt to bribe her with a toy or treat is to no avail. I realize that I should be patient with her, but what else should I do to make myself seem less threatening to her?

Answer
Ashley,

Here is a link to an excellent article written by a friend of mine specifically for Abyssinians (more skittish than most when first adopted), so the advice would easily transfer to you:

For starters, you need to approach things on her terms.  When you approach her, she feels threatened, after all, she does not know you.  So, besides feeding and changing the litter pans, you should not approach her.  Let her come to you for affection on her terms.  When she is ready and secure in her new surroundings, she may be willing to venture out and see you.  So, just make pretend she does not exist, until she comes to you. Remember, everything must be on her terms!

Also, as a last note, 4 days is not much time for her to become socialized to you.  It may be within a week, she will warm up to you, it may take much longer.  You need to be very patient with her.  Who knows what trauma she suffered in the past?

Please keep me posted.

Good luck and best regards... Norm.
