Cats vaccination

Question
I have 3 indoor cats.  1 female 6yrs old - 1 female and 1 male 4 years old and a 6 year old dog.   Since my cats never go out is it necessary to have them vaccinated? Could the dog transmit diseases to my cats?
Thanks

Answer
Ginette,

May I assume your cats had the usual kitten shots?  If so, there is no need for further vaccinations.  If not, they should get a round of 3-1 shots (panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, and calici).  If you live in a jurisdiction that requires rabies, they should get that as well (it's the law).

The only things that dogs can give to cats (for which there are vaccines) are rabies and bordatella (kennel cough).  If the dog does not get boarded out, Bordatella should not be a problem.  If you get your cats vaccinated against rabies, have your vet give an adjuvant free rabies vaccine to your cast in a hind leg.  Shots should NEVER be given in the scruff of the neck on cats unless absolutely necessary.

I hope this helps.

Best regards... Norm.
