Question
hi Amanda.

i have two cats a male and a female. a month back we had to adopt a puppy who was abandoned and left to die by my neighbours. he was abused and he was so thin that his ribs showed. now, he is fat and healthy and my older male cat hates him. he hits the three month old lab and mutt mix dog a lot and hisses and growls. the other cat has started sleeping with the puppy and they are quiet good friends. my question is, do dogs and cats get along. will the puppy hurt the cats? my cats are my priority and i love them a lot. please reply. thanks

Answer
Generally speaking, puppies who grow up with cats tend to not be cat aggressive.  There are always exceptions to the rule, but usually any harm they cause is just from playing too hard.  Dogs and cats play a lot different, so I always think its a good idea to supervise any play time they have.  It's also normal for adult cats who have never been around dogs before to behave aggressively to them, and some will never be friends, but they can learn to tolerate each other.  If you work with your new puppy and help teach him what is and is not acceptable behavior around your cats, I'm sure everything will work out for you.
