Separating kittens from their mom

Question
Hi Ali,

My cat's two kittens have recently been re-homed. Unfortunately she keeps looking for them, and it hurts to hear her call/wait up for them. She's been down these past few days, and I'm wondering how long this going to last?
PS: the kittens were 8 weeks old when they were re-homed

Thanks,
Karen

Answer
Karen,

Typically it's best not to re-home kittens before they are at least 10-12 weeks of age - those early weeks are incredibly important for mom and babies to spend together for the future behavioural health of the kittens. Sadly there is very little you can do to help her through the process of coping with the loss of her kittens - you can't explain that they've gone on to homes of their own. It's difficult to say just how long she will look for her babies, it varies from cat to cat but I would suspect that within a couple of weeks she will be mostly past that. If you have any further cat related questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me again at any time - I'm more than happy to help in any way that I can.

Kind regards,

Ali
