best food to avoid further UTIs

Question
What can I feed my cat so he doesn't get more UTI's?  He is at the vet right now being treated for a block.  I currently feed him Wellness and Nature's Choice with a 1/2 can of Fancy Feast in AM and again in PM. (I have two cats so they share).  The second cat came to me from foster care and she eats the new Fancy Feast dry food. My older cat (a boy) was eating it too along with the regular.  Should I dump that food?  Also, I switched from clay litter to scoop...could that be a cause?  any advice appreciated.  I am so worried about my boy cat.
thanks. Cate

Answer
Cate,

It is a common problem with male cats. My vet told me that
if they do not like their litterpan, (if they don't go on the carpet) they will hold their urine too long like people
and end up with a UTI.

So first you need to make the litterpan more attractive
to your cat. I do not like pans with hoods on them cuz they
trap the smell. I don't think cats like it either.
Clumping litter is best because clay is very messy and inconvenient as well.

You are going to have to choose ONE BRAND AND TYPE of litter and STICK WITH IT. DO NOT CHANGE THE LITTER
If you decide to say, buy, (I'll make up a name)
Miss Molly Scoopable with baking soda, you stick to that.
Even changing to Miss Molly Scoopable with scented baking soda..or Miss Molly Scoopable for Multiple Cats may upset
your cat. It has to be the EXACT same litter ALL the time
(and one that he likes of course)

(Cats hate change - they are creatures of habit..and in fact they also don't like their food to be changed a lot)

You will need to completely change the pan once a week
and clean it out with dish soap and water (not ammonia or bleach)  Save the clean litter if you like and then add
more litter as needed when finished.

Litter should be changed 2 times a day. If you happen to be at home a lot...when you pass the litterbox it doesn't hurt to scoop out whats in there

Don't put the litterpan near high traffic areas or noises
that may upset the cat (washer/dryer, furnace noises, etc)
Once you decide on a location for the litterpan, do not change it (if it works for your cat - remember cats hate change)

Have 1 litterpan for every cat that you have, and then 1 extra pan. (for example, if you have 2 cats...have 2 litterpans, + 1 more litterpan)

Make sure your cat has access to fresh clean water..the
bowls should be washed out with dish soap every day
Cats are bad about drinking water so they are  fussy
about fresh water.

Maybe even a gallon of spring water
will encourage him to drink more (nothing fancy, walmart brand is fine but be aware that distilled water tastes weird)

OR you can leave your tub faucet drip lightly
dripping water attracts cats and they love to drink this way  you can even put a dish underneath to collect some of the water to see if they like that too  just a very light
drip nothing that will increase your water bill

as you know, its important to drink lots of water when you have a UTI and to prevent recurrences

as for food..you can try Purina One (special care formula)
for urinary tract if your vet thinks it will help...wet food is good (but pricey) as it has lots of water in it

in my *opinion* I would try the other suggestions as they are very important

thanks for the question!  ps: clay litter is awful
it has to be changed completely every day, very dusty..my cat hated it
cuz the pee isn't absorbed like clummping and he got his
paws wet with pee whenever he used it! I learned the
hard way - its false economy

any other questions i'm here 24/7 ;-D
