litter box area change

Question
I have 3 four months old kittens and their mother.  The litter boxes (3) are in the spare bedroom.  This was a mistake due to our children and guests that will be visiting during the holidays, I want to move the litter boxes to another space. (Master bathroom). What do I do to help this change go well.

Answer
Rebecca,

You should move the litterboxes one at a time out of the spare room to the master bathroom. When you know they are ALL using the litterboxes you moved, in addition to the ones in the old location, close the door of the spare bedroom and keep it closed. That should force them into  using the litterboxes the new location.

Then use an enzyme cleaner to remove any traces of previous litterbox use and use some kind of citrus cleaner or perfume around the area. You can also put orange or lemon peels in a blender with a little water and sprinkle that in the area and at the entrance way to the room. Cats HATE the smell of citrus which should discourage them from further attempts to go to the bathroom in the spare room.

You can lock the kittens (and mother) in the master bathroom about 10 minutes after feeding them a can of cat food and wait until they all use the litterbox to get used to using it in there.

I hope this answers your question.
