Introducing momma and newborn kittens to existing cats

Question

Momma cat and two babi
A pregnant calico cat (1-2 years old) adopted us and promptly had two kittens. We think she may have been dumped off by previous evil owners as she is sweet and obviously an indoor cat. The babies are 2 weeks old and doing fine, and all have been to the vet (mom is healthy and FIV/FLV negative, not microchipped). She is secluded in a bedroom with her kitties. We have two cats already - a 8 year old female and an 8 month old male. They know she is in the house but haven't met the kitties. When and how do we introduce the newbies - all at once? The mom first? Kitties first? At what age can kittens meet the existing cats without worries for their safety (the vet said our cats may try to kill them when they are very small). How to handle possible aggressive/protective behavior from all of the adults?

Answer
Hi Patricia, well you certainly have a house full dont you? :)
The best indicator as to when to start introductions will be your mom cat. Is she growly and very very protective of the kittens??? or is she quite calm? What you can do is try to bring her out to the main part of the house when your other cats are away in a bedroom or bathroom. Let her sniff around and familiarize herself with the surroundings. If she is very growly and runs back to her kittens.. then it is too soon. Leave it a couple of days and try again. ALso once she has been out in the house your other cats can smell that she has been there and they will start to get used to her.
I have NEVER had a cat kill kittens. I am starting to think that is an old wives tale... at least with my experience. So, I would not worry about your older cats hurting the kittens. I think that is the least of your worries ! some mom cats are very calm with their babies and have no problem with other cats sniffing around at them... and then there are the mom cats that don't want anyone near their babies until they are about 9 weeks old !! So, it will be entirely up to the mom. Please write back and let me know how things are going. The babies look adorable thanks for the picture. Teresa
