Cats skin condition

Question
Hi Kris,
I hope you can help.
My cat is long-haired (mixed breed),7yrs old and is a housecat.  Occasionaly she will go outside in the garden but only very briefly.
I took her to the vet a year ago after she appeared to be agitated and was grooming excessively.  Another symptom at the time was dry flakes of skin appearing in her coat from her grooming.
The vet diagnosed her as having a dry skin condition and prescribed tablets which did clear up the condition.
Recently though, my cats symptoms have returned and are much worse.  There are nicks and scabs on her skin from severe scratching. She also has a really sensitive patch near her tail on her back and does not tolerate any contact at this place.
Again I took her to the vet, who has treated her this time for fleas and said that her skin had experienced a severe allergic reaction to them.  It is now about three weeks after her initial treatment (two more months worth to go) and she did appeared to settle a bit.  Now however, she has begun to groom agressively again and is continually scratching.  Also the dry skin flakes have returned.  She doesn't mind being bathed so what I thought was that I would gently groom her then give her a medicated bath to see if that would help.  What do you advise?
Regards,
Pauline

Answer
Pauline,
If she tolerates bathing, go ahead and do it. But it sounds like she has sensitive skin that has manifests itself in itching, flaking, and flea medications.  Go to a holistic pet supply and look for a natural flea shampoo.  I know one where I live, I don't know if he has a website, but I can search for you and let you know if you can purchase his products on line. All I would need is your email to contact you.  Also try putting a small amount of vegetable oil in some canned food, this should help with the flaking of her skin.  Her skin problems might be a result of a poor diet, lacking of something.  Talk to your vet, or search the net on natural pet remedies.  I have delt with traditional and holsitic vets.  I find holistic is the best to get the high quality dietary needs and the traditional is good for the medical needs.
