head movement in domestic cats

15:52:07

Question
I have observed my cat exploring our garden. Often he will stop and move his head (I call it head "bobbing") from side to side and up and down. My conjecture was that this was a feline way of compensating for poor binocular vision but this iks just a guess. Do you have any accurate information on this phenomenon?

Answer
Steve,

Cats have excellent binocular vision, but their visual field is activated mostly by motion, when they are on the prowl.  The head movement is checking to see if something changed in the visual field that might be identified as prey.
