Soft spots on a kittens head

16:33:05

Question
Do kittens have soft spots on their heads like newborn human babies?  If so, how long do they remain open?

Answer
The plates of a kitten's skull aren't fused together at birth, but the open areas are so small that the soft spot is generally undetectable.  In some cases, a soft spot (open fontanel) can be felt on the forehead.  This is a minor defect but is generally not dangerous.  In most cases, the fontanel closes within a couple of months but can take up to a year.  In the event that it does not close, there is usually no worry aside from being careful not to allow any head trauma.  Open fontanels don't usually cause any type of brain damange.
