Kittens getting milk

16:17:19

Question
My cat just went into labor 2hrs ago. She has delivered two so far. She doesn't look like she has milk. Her teats aren't swollen, infact a few are inverted. How to I know if she does have milk. When do I attempt to "supplement" the kittens.

Thanks
Becky

Answer
Hi Becky, The kittens will not need milk for the first 24 - 48 hours so don't worry at this point. As long as your mom cat has enough good nipples for the number of kittens that she has she will be fine. The kittens are going to receive colostrum at this point which is a watery milky liquid that is full of antibodies... very important! The best thing you can do at this point is to keep the kittens warm until she finishes delivering. As long as the kittens are warm they will nurse on their own. Write me back later and let me know how things are going and maybe I can help you out a bit more
