Cats and strawberries

Question
My cat did the strangest thing earlier today.  A container full of strawberries apparently got him riled up as if the strawberries were catnip!
We picked up take out on the way home from the grocery store, and left most of the groceries in the plastic bags on the kitchen floor while we ate our take out spaghetti.
Well, our seven year old tabby came along and got real excited trying to get into one of the grocery bags.  At first we thought he was just having a ball playing in the bag, but he was just too intent on getting at something in there.  So we looked in the bag and realized it was the container of fresh strawberries he is trying to get at.  We set the container of strawberries on the kitchen floor, and the cat rubbed his face all over it very enthusiastically, like if it was catnip.  I have never heard of a cat going nuts over strawberries before, so I thought maybe there was some unusual scent on the container.  We took the strawberries out of the container and put them in a bowl, then set both the bowl of strawberries and the empty container on the floor by the cat.  The cat went for the strawberries! He rubbed his face all over them!

Have you ever heard of a cat reacting to strawberries in a manner similar to cat nip before?
We have had many cats over the years, and I had never seen a cat react in any way to strawberries before!

Answer
Hi Shelley,

No, I've not heard of cats reacting to strawberries like catnip. However, I have two cats where one simply love durians and the other loves the smell of mint and would react in the same way as your cat would to strawberries.

Coincidentally, about 15% of the cats would not react to catnip.
