Adopted cat had kittens.

Question
Hi Karen,
I recently adopted a stray in the neighborhood. It turned out she was pregnant and 6 weeks ago gave birth to 5 little beauties.  I have heard some of them sneeze occasionally and some of them also have crusty eyes. It seems to go back and forth between them. One day one has it then the next day another.  The worst part now is that mom has been having horrible smelling bowel movements and diarrhea. It's a very orange color.  She has vomited once a day for the past three days though it seems to be hairball and today a I noticed a long piece of grass in it. She goes outside to our backyard each day and I do see her biting the grass. Everyone's eating  and drinking and she's still nursing the kittens a little.  The kittens seem happy and playful but I can tell mom doesn't feel well.  Her nose is damp as it should be. I've had to wash her a few times in the past few weeks because she smells bad but I attributed that to the kittens climbing all over her. Again her bowel movements smell so bad we can hardly take it and she has horrible smelling flatulence. What's happening to her? I plan to take her to the vet as soon as payday arrives at the end of the week but for now is there anything we can do to help the situation? And what about the kittens? I don't want to give them to people if they're ill too.
Thank you!

Answer
Hi Sasha,

The mom and the little ones sound like they might have some sort of upper respiratory infections and worms. A trip to the vet will take of it. As for the smelly bowel movements, change her food. Give her Purina One kitten food. It is a higher quality food that has the extra nutrition she needs when she's feeding the kittens. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
