Mother Cat giving birth, NOW!

Question
We were given a pregnant cat by some people who were moving and couldn't take her with. She has adapted well to her new environment. She is right now giving birth. How long does it typically take a mother cat to give birth to her babies? How many babies can I expect? I'm assuming if she doesn't seem irritable or mean that she is feeling well and all is going well, is that correct? She has 2 babies already and doesn't mind me petting her.

Answer
Hi Barb, It normally takes less than 12 hours for a cat to finish delivering the whole litter. They can have up to 10 or even 11 kittens but the norm would be  4-5 kittens. IF she settles down when she is finished delivering and nurses the babies and cares for them you can assume all is fine. It is great that she is being so good with you. Some cats can get quite nasty when delivering !!
