Help with 1 week old orpaned kittens

Question
This is a long story..... recently my dog found a litter of kittens under my house, he got into where the momma cat had her babies and killed one of the kittens before I had realized what he was doing. anyway, I went under the house to see if there were anymore kittens and there were three more. So, I got them out from under the house and placed them in a box so that the momma cat could come back to get the kittens and *hopefully* take them somewhere else so that my dog couldn't get to them. The momma cat came back, but she only took one kitten with her! I should probbaly also mention that the mom cat is EXTREMLY WILD and will not get anywher near me. I left the kittens outside for about 6 hours and I finally gave up. (it only took her about ten minutes to come get the first one, and I haven't seen any trace of her since.) So, now with two probably 1-2 week old kittens (they just barely have their eyes opened, I decided to just wean them myself, so I went and bought some kitten formula and they eat pretty well. I had a litter of puppies before whose mother was run over by a car when they were 2-3 weeks old so I'm pretty sure I can handle it. However I've read that kittens can't go to the bathroom without stimulation and I've tried to get them to poo but all they ever do is pee. I've been takeing a barely wet warm cotton ball and gently rubbing their area with it, but it just isn't working.  Am I doing something wrong, or do kittens just not go to the bathroom that often. (I've already had the kittens for about two days, and I've tried to find the momma cat to give her back her babies, but I can't.)

Answer
Hi Amy, well you certainly have your hands full. I would assume at this point that you are not going to have that momma cat back on your porch looking for her kittens. Cats can't count and she may think that she has a full litter right now !! And the dog has startled her and upset her.. she may be long gone.. or she may appear in a  few weeks. BUT. for now it looks like you are a foster mom ! I would recommend contacting  your local rescue organizations and see if anyone has a mom that is already nursing kittens that might take on your two little ones. This would be the best for the kittens and the easiest for you ! If that fails then continue as you are as it sounds like you are doing everything correctly.
The kittens should be having bowel movements every time you feed them.. so every few hours. They will not be solid at this age but more like a smeary mustard on the cloth. Sometimes when kittens start onto a formula they get constipated so that may be what is happening. Try adding a little bit of mashed pumpkin to their formula. Each kitten should have about 1/2 cc daily until they start to have movements. Also make sure that you are adding the correct amount of milk to the formula. It is better to have it too watery then too thick..  Let me know how it works out. If they don't have a bowel movement in the next few hours I would recommend to get them onto another mom asap or to get them to a vet... Teresa
