Question
My rescued female long haired cat was bred by a wandering neighborhood tom before we thought she was able to breed (surprise!!)  anyway I have been able to locate the tom and he is a moderately longhaired male while she is very long haired with the tufts from the ears.  What is the likelihood that her kittens (3) will be long haired.  I have interested parties in adoption but only if they are long haired.  Thanks!

Answer
Marta,

There are 4 different alleles of the LH/SH gene and all LH alleles are recessive to the SH allele. It is just becoming clear how all this works, but there still seems to be lots of work to be done. The only paper published, so far, is very technical.

So, depending on the genetics of the medium haired tom, you could have all LH kittens, all SH kittens, or (most likely) a mix of both LH and SH kittens.

It is a bit of a crap shoot!!!!!!!!!

Let me know what you get in the litter.

Best regards... Norm.
