Point color of kittens

Question
I am raising a litter of siamese kittens for rescue. Mom is a tortie and dad a
flame. What color can I expect. They are 2 1/2 weeks old. I pretty sure one is a
flame but no idea right now of the other three. Thanks so much

Answer
Hi Peggy.  Males always get their color from their mother.  Since it would take a rare mutation to result in a male tortie, we'll just rule that out.  So assuming mom is a seal tortie (black and red as opposed to blue and cream), the males can be either seal points or red (flame) points.

The females get their color from both parents.  Since mom is carrying both the red and seal genes, the kittens could take either color from her.  They'll get the red gene from dad.  If they take a seal from mom, they'll be torties.  If they take a red from mom, they'll be red points.

So that means your females have a 50% chance of being red and a 50% chance of being tortie.  Your males have a 50% chance of being red and a 50% chance of being seal.

This is all assuming that neither parent is carrying anything hidden.  If mom and dad are carrying hidden chocolate genes, for instance, you could potentially end up with some chocolates or chocolate torties.
