My cat gave birth to one stillborn kitten

15:42:34

Question
Hello, my 1 year old Daisy gave birth this evening (7:30pm) to a stillborn kitten. My husband tried for at least ten minutes or more to revive it and no luck. She cleaned it and did everything she was supposed to do. She was a perfect little mommy. It is now 12:15 and no sign of labor. In fact, she went out and wandered around the house and was even playful. (her normal behavior) She is sleepy off and on and is eating, drinking and pottying just fine and is VERY loveable. I cannot tell if there are anymore babies. Her nipples are swollen and there are lumps behind them, but I cannot tell if those are kittens. The nipples closest to her vaginal area are most swollen. I do not feel movement. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Crystal, I am sorry you lost that baby. It is possible that was the only kitten she had. Was she overdue? perhaps the kitten was overdue and that is why it was born dead...
Do you know her due date? and was she very large when she was pregnant??? or did she look like she may have only had one. her nipples will be swollen as she was ready to nurse a litter so that is not unusual. If you don't feel movement then most likely there are no more kittens in her.. BUT>>> there could be another one that is dead however mom cats are more restless when there are retained kittens in them. They don't usually play and behave normally. I would recommend you wait a day and see what happens. She may deliver a dead one in the morning.. or even a live one. If she is eating ok and doesn't have diarrhea or behave in a listless manner then she is probably ok. Teresa
