introducing newborn kittens to other cats

Question
My cat gave birth to three healthy kittens last week. We set up a nest for her (in the bathroom, the only place totally separate from the other adult cats) but she's extremely social and keeps trying to move the kittens out into the living room.  How long should I keep newborn kittens separated from other adult cats before making the introduction process?

Answer
Hi Jeff,

Let the Momma cat decide. She knows best. Cats try to introduce and socialize the kits with other cats very young. If she wants to bring them out then let her. She feels they are safe. Just keep an eye on things. You may see some growling or swatting. Don't worry about that. It is just the adults keeping the kits in line. But if they seem to be hurting the kits you can step in. Mom will usually be the one discipling the kits. The other adult cats will be very curious. Mom will watch them carefully at first. Then when she judges all OK it won't phase her with the others around. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
