False Pregnancy? Should I take my cat to the vet?

Question
Hello,
My inside cat (who has not been spayed) got outside October the 5th, well she HATES other cats so we were hoping she wasn't pregnant. It seems like two weeks or so later she went into heat again. I do remember my neutered male mating with her around this time. Well, a few days before Christmas her stomach started to swell and we were expecting little ones to arrive. So, we put her in our bathroom with a cardboard box, some pillows, some blankets and kept a close eye on her. The day before Christmas Eve she started to leak fluids and licking herself alot. I watched her very closely all day. She seemed to be starting the first steps of labor, (moving the kittens?)  although I didn't realize this at the time and was totally freaking out. She started leaking A LOT of fluids, she had a small puddle by her back feet. However once she stopped what appeared to be contractions and leaking, nothing happened, no step 2, no kittens. So I did a little research and decided she had a false pregnancy. Now however she is still leaving small dots of this fluid all over our bathroom, no bigger than a pencil eraser and only about one to four drops a day. Her behavior is normal, very sweet and happy, energetic. I'm not sure if I should take her to the vet or not. We really don't have the money so I would like to avoid it if I could. However I don't want to risk her health. Please help if you can. Thank you!

~Megan

P.S. Sorry this is so long I just wanted to make sure I had all the details.

Answer
Hi Megan.  If it's definitely been since October 5th that she might have been exposed to any unneutered males, then pregnancy is out of the question, so there's no danger that she has undelivered kittens.  If the fluid has been completely clear and she's acting normally, then I suppose it's okay not to get her to a vet for now.  However, if the fluid has any color to it besides a clear pink, which could indicate heat, she should be checked out.  This could mean she's got a uterine infection, which is life threatening.
