Kittens and Diarrhea

Question
Hi Lisa,

I have a kitten who is about 7 or 8 months old.  I got her from the Humane Society so she was well cared for, and is fixed, and up to date on her shots.  When we picked her up from the Humane Society we were told that she was on a special food because she had diarrhea.  We didn't notice a problem with this when we brought her home, but then a week went by and suddenly she had very, very bad diarrhea.  It just leaks out of her.  We have changed her diet to Iams kitten food and she didn't like that.  She eats heartily and drinks plenty of water.  She is completely and totally normal for a kitten - very playful, affectionate, and happy.  I have no clue what to do about this problem.  We did treat her for worms, which we noticed in her feces - tapeworms.  That cleared up, but the diarrhea didn't.  I've read online that this usually goes away on its own after a while - but it's been about six weeks now, and quite frankly, I am at the end of my rope cleaning up after this sweet kitten.  Oh, she is an indoor only kitten.  And also, her butt is really sore from her cleaning efforts - I think that's what bothers her the most. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much!
Lisa

Answer
your vet should have suggested something for it, a different type of food or something. look in the local grocery store or pet store and try a cat food for sensitive stomach.

I have looked this problem up on a website where vets answer questions: here is what the vet said:
dietary control of diarrhea in kittens
is to use a low fat, moderate fiber diet
there are commercial diets such as Hill's w/d that are what is needed.

im sorry i cant answer you any better, everytime i have a cat that has diarrhea, it clears up in a few days. i have never had this problem.
