Question
QUESTION: Hi. Early september i adopted a cat that had been abandoned in my apartment building. I realized it was previously owned because when I brought her in to feed her, she had got straight to my other cat's litter box. I discovered her nipples her longer than I thought normal. I was told she might be pregnant but I don't know how to tell. I've felt her tummy and I can't tell a difference. Explain to me what I should look for

ANSWER: Hi Courtney, A cat can have those long nipples if she has had a litter previously. Now to tell if she is pregnant at this time you can look for a few things.
Is she in heat? If she is not in heat and she is not spayed.. then she is probably pregnant.
Is she getting larger every week. Once a cat has passed the half way mark in her pregnancy she will get substantially larger as each week goes by. It is not hard to miss.
Her appetite should be increasing every week. By the last 2 weeks of her pregnancy you should be able to easily feel the kittens moving.

QUESTION: actually, yes she has been getting fatter if you will. And no she's not in heat and no spayed and i imagine that she must have had kittens at some point, i am not sure. She gets along well with my other cat, but if she is pregnant, i'm concerned about my other cat being aggressive towards the kittens. But she does seem to eat alot, however, she was pretty thin when i found her in the hallways here. To be perfectly honest, I don't even know her exact age. Took to a vet though to be checked out and everything was fine except they couldn't tell if she was pregnant themselves. But other than that, that mostly covers my concerns. She's a sweetie and I can't imagine who would abandon her, Thanks for your help.
Courtney

Answer
Hi Courtenay, Well if the vet can't tell if she is pregnant then she is not too far along. If you are starting to notice a bigger belly and yet there is no movement.. I would guess she is about 4-5 weeks along. This website has fantastic information to help you through this event.

I would not worry too much about your other cat. They usually know that the kittens are helpless and no threat to them.... also mom is there to protect them if needed. You will be surprised at how her instincts come out when she has kittens !
