Travelling w/cat on plane overseas

Question
I am going to travel with my cat overseas (cat in bag under seat).  I will be going through Amsterdam's airport from the USA and will have an 11 hour layover until I take another flight to Central Asia.  Question, does a cat use the restroom while in the bag under my seat on the plane during the flight or hold it?  Also, does the airport have a place for me to let kitty out to use the restroom and eat during layover?   And, is there a kennel for it if I go to the city during layover?  I have only brought kitty on 4 hour plane rides in the USA, not overseas so this is all new to me (I will not ship the cat underneath the plane, no).  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Vin, well we hope that your cat will not go in the bag under the seat but it sounds like you have a well traveled cat so he will probably try really hard to hold it for you. What I do with my cats is have a leash and harness with me when traveling and a fold up cardboard litter box or even a clothes box from a xmas gift would work !! I then make sure I leave enough time to go into a bathroom in the airport before boarding the plane. I find a corner or a large handicap stall that I can set the litter box up and I have a small ziploc bag with a small amount of litter in it to pour into the box. Then , with my cat in a harness I give him time to sniff around the bathroom and the box and he will usually use it. It can sometimes take 15-20 minutes so try to find a place that is comfortable for you to sit and wait.. there is the OBVIOUS option :) Then just throw away everything and have enough supplies packed that you could even do this in the plane bathroom if your cat started crying to go to the bathroom while in flight. Then again during layovers give him the same opportunity and a chance to stretch his legs and get something to eat and drink  It works well with my cats so hopefully you will have the same luck ! You don't need much litter.. just about 1/4 cup per time... and enough for him to scratch around and get the idea what the box is for !
Good luck and have a great flight ! Teresa
