My husband accidentally killed our kitten.

Question
One of my cats, Baby, gave birth to one kitten 17 days ago. A few days after it was born she moved it into our bed. I tried moving it but she brought it back so we decided to leave well enough alone. We have been very careful about boxing it in with pillow, but tonight that didn't happen and the kitten was killed. My husband rolled over in his sleep on top of it and by the time I saw what happened it was too late. It only happened an hour ago. The mother tried cleaning it and nudging it with her head until I took it away. She's crying and so pitiful! What is going to happen with her now since it was her only (and first) one? Is there anything I can do to help her through the grieving process? I feel like the worst person in the world right now.

Answer
I am so sorry to hear that this happened and recommend if your cat gives birth again to place the mother and the kittens in another room and close them in there at night with litter, food, etc. so this does not occur again.

As for your mother cat, you must show her a lot of attention, because she will physically as well as emotionally feel the loss.
Interact with her as much as you can, give her some special treats and let her stay near you as often as possible. If she goes outdoors, which I imagine she does because she got pregnant, let her go and have her fun. She will get through it, as will you.
Most important is to make sure this never happens again, though.
