Question
The last time we took him to the vet was probably close to two years ago.  Since I've been in college I haven't been home to help with him.  We have given him quite a bit of canned catfood, but there are some kinds he won't touch.  Needless to say, he is a very picky cat.  He also has hip problems for two reasons: when he was about two years old a coyote bit him right over his hips; he also landed wrong when he jumped out of a tree.  He limps now, and my dad gives him some crushed aspirin mixed in with his food.  Is there anything else I can do for his hips without using the aspirin?  I don't want to use aspirin on him because I'm not so sure that's good for him.  I'll try that recipe for the kitty glop and any other recommendations you have for us.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Kelly,

Definitely take him to a vet. There could be a bunch of problems that can be easily fixed by a vet for his weight loss.
Aspirin should only be given every three days. Try some glucosomin for him.

There are different recipes for kitty glop but here is mine.

You will need all these ingredients.

1 cup unflavored Pedialyte
1 envelope unflavored Knox gelatin
1 8oz. can of evaporated milk
2 tbs. mayonnaise
2 tbs. plain yogurt or better yet, Greek yogurt
1 tbs. light karo syrup
1 egg yolk
1 jar chicken or turkey stage 1 baby food

Make sure all these ingredients are not non fat. You want to use the real things.

Heat Pedialyte to boiling.
Add Knox gelatin. Dissolve.
Mix all other ingredients together then add to gelatin mixture.
Pour into bowl and cover. When cool it will look like a pudding. This will last about two weeks. Or you can pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it. It will last about a month frozen.
I usually feed about 2 tbs. 4 or 5x a day. You can slightly warm it up for your cat.

Please get him to a vet. 15 years is not that old for a cat. I know of many that are 20-25 years old. Good luck and let me know what happens and how she likes the glop.

Ciao, Karen
