Is it okay to use two flea medicines at the same time?

Hi,

My kitten (6 months old) Dewey, has had a bad flea problem ever since I rescued him at 6 weeks old. I give him 'Program For Cats' and I also give him flea baths. The baths seem to work, but it just seems like the fleas are never ending and they come back on him the next day.

I just got some Advantage for Cats and I really want to use it on him because it says it will kill fleas in up to 12 hours. I have looked around online and it says that it should be fine to use the two at the same time (I gave the Program to Dewey earlier this month).

What do you think? Would it be safe for him?

The 'Program For Cats' is an internal liquid medicine that I give to him by mixing it with his wet food.

The 'Advantage' is an external medicine that I would be applying it to him on the back of his neck.

Hi Maria,

Yes, it's okay to use these two together. However, be sure not to bathe Dewey anymore once you apply the Advantage. Advantage is not waterproof, and while the treatment will withstand grooming and some water, it will wash off with shampoo, even after the treatment is allowed to dry.

I have found Advantage to be the most effective treatment against fleas and haven't needed to use anything else in addition, but if required, you may continue to use an oral treatment like Program or Capstar.
