Kitten having kittens

Question
My kitten is about 7months old and gave birth to 5 kittens this morning, does she have enough milk producing? I had to help her with number 4 because she was so tired, after pushing her out she would not clean off the sack nor chew completely through cord.

Answer
Mary,

Generally mother cats produce enough milk for their babies. If you are concerned about milk production you can always weigh the kittens daily on a digital kitchen scale - if they are gaining weight then all is well and they can be left to their mom's loving care, if they aren't then you can supplement the kittens in turn with a bottle or two of kitten milk replacer each day just to help add some nutrition to their bodies and help them grow. Make sure mom has access to as much of a high quality kitten food as she wants to eat because this will help ensure that she has the resources she needs to support her own growth as well as meeting the needs of her growing kittens - it also wouldn't hurt to supplement mom's diet with some kitten milk replacer as it has a high fat, protein and vitamin content, this will help her provide for her babies and recover from their birth. Another way to guage whether or not the kittens are getting enough food from their mom is to watch them - are they nursing happily and sleeping soundly or are they squirmy, whiny and generally unhappy? If they seem happy and content they're getting plenty to eat, if they are squirmy and unhappy then they are probably in need of some extra food.
