Question
Hello Norman,

My name is Supriya and I am an animal-lover. I have two cats at my home. My two sisters and I love our cats but my Papa is not fond of them. My cat was pregnant and she gave birth to 4 kittens yesterday at about 2.30pm. She gave birth in a corner of our bedroom and we didn't know that. When we heard the sounds of the kittens we got alert. Sister told Papa and what he did was unbearable for me and for my sisters. He took the kittens and thrown them in a nearby bush outside our house. I tried to stop him but he was very angry and will not listen to me. I took the mother cat near the bush and she was trying to bring her kittens with her mouth. She succeeded in bringing one from the bush and she put that kitten in our car-garage. After that she was feeding her. At night it was raining very heavily and i m afraid that the other kittens might have been dead by now. In the morning i went to garage but i could not find the kitten. There is also a male cat in our area and i think he has killed the small one. Now, the mother cat keeps on calling for her kittens inside our house (in the place where she gave birth) and also outside our house in search of her kittens. The sight is so distressing and unbearable for me. I want to help her but don't know what to do. She keeps on staring at me and keeps on calling. I am concerned about her health. Since she could not feed her kittens will it be bad for her health ? And will she be able to forget her kittens and live a normal life? Or will she be depressed for a long time? Please help me. I am heartbroken !

Answer
Supriya,

I am sorry for your loss!!!!!!!!

Cats are very practical creatures.  She may search for and mourn her lost kittens for a couple of weeks, but usually within two weeks to a month, they snap out of it and continue on!

As for the milk, it will dry up on its own within a couple of weeks. Her mammaries may get hard during this process (called packing up), but she will absorb the unused milk.

Best regards... Norm.
