LEFT EYE SWOLLEN SHUT

Question
Hello, My cat (Gato) has a bad eye, I have a big cat (Nemo) he and Gato playfight allday. I think Nemo scratched Gato in the eye. Gato's eye is swollen tonite it was seeping white goo and his eye was swollen shut when I forced it open I thought his eyeball fell out or broke. I seen puffy pink tissue it was covering the eye ball.
I cleaned the goo off and applied a heated towel and massaged the eye for a while and he eventually started to open it little by little.
Tonite he was using it half-way, but now it is shut and puffy and gooey again and he looks uncomfortable.
I am very concerned if this may need emergency medical attention.

Please I will be waiting for you to respond.

Sincerely,
Bea Billips

Answer
Hi Bea!
I would definitely get Gato to your veterinarian today.  If Gato was scratched in the eye, there could be a laceration on his cornea which will be in need of treatment.  The white goo would indicate infection, in which antibiotic eye drops will cure.  The puffy pink tissue that you are seeing is the third eyelid.  This would indicate either infection or injury.  Either way, Gato's eye should be easily treatable and cured.  Don't force the eye open, as this could cause a larger tear in the cornea, if that is in fact what happened.  You can, however, apply a warm cloth to his eye, like you did, and clean the goo off of his eye.  Keeping it clean will help the infection clear up, along with the antibiotic eye drops.
Either this is caused by the injury a scratch has caused, or it is simply a conjunctivitis (infection).  This is definitely cause for a vet visit, but will be easily treated with the proper medication.
I hope this helps and I hope Gato feels better!
