Question
I have a 3 year old female himmy that refuses to use the litter box.  She has soiled the couch & beds.  We clean the litter box daily but she still refuses to go.  This has been an ongoing problem for a year.  We are so frustrated!  We tried getting her reaquainted by shutting her in the room with the litter box, didn't help.  Please give me any advice you have.
Sincerely,
Frustrated

Answer
Hi there!  I would definitely recommend a vet visit, as a urinary tract infection is the #1 reason a cat will refuse to use the litterbox.  If a cat is not feeling his/her best, they will also boycot the litterbox.
Is your cat spayed? If she is not spayed, elimination outside the litterbox can be caused by a female going into heat, behavioral problems, or the need to mark her territory.
If she is spayed, I would definitely recommend a "wellness" checkup with your veterinarian to rule out any health related problems.
Please let me know how it goes and best of luck!
