Question
We are getting ready to adopt a Toy Poodle.  He was born on January 1,2005.  The breeder took him for his 6 week check and he weighs 1 lb. 7 ounces. His Mom is 10 lbs. and Dad 8 lbs. The breeder said it is ready to go.  I am worried because he is the runt.  He is still nursing a little but mostly eating solid food. I have read that is better to leave them for at least 8 wks. Can you tell me if you think he is ready to come home?  And will he be smaller because he is the runt?  And do the runts tend to be sicker?
Thank you so much for your help!

Answer
Hi Deana

a GREAT breeder keeps their puppies for 8-10 weeks. Those are crucial periods of socialization for a puppy. Taking him away too soon can cause anxiety, and social problems.

Sounds like this breeder is pushing a small puppy on you. Are you ready to deal with a potentially smaller and sicker puppy?
