Cat head tilt

Question
I volunteer at a shelter. A long haired cat, male, approx.6 months old was turned in found roaming neighborhood, may have never had a home. He has a constant tilted head. He runs around and plays, acts normal, just his head is slightly tilted. Other than that he is just the most loving cat ever, would have had a home by now if people weren't so turned off by this imperfection. I just love this little cat! The vet has checked him and cannot find anything wrong with his ears. But at a shelter, how much can they check? I would be able to find him a home, and am heartbroken because this is probably not possible because of this. My mother is law feels so bad for this cat from what I was telling her about him, that she is willing to pay to get him an xray, hoping that may pin point what is causing it. Is this a good idea?  Neither of us can adopt him, I have 3 cats, she has 6! Please advise.

Answer
The head tilt may be a neurological response to a middle ear or inner ear problem.  Of course, it could be from muscle or nerve damage in the neck as a young kitten, too.  He should be evaluated by a vet that can check the eardrum and middle ear.  Most vets can't do that. You might have to call around your local area to see if anyone has a video otoscope.
