Question
We had to put our beloved 16-year-old cat to sleep yesterdy.  She's been to our vet for the past two weeks. She hasn't been eating or pooing. She was drinking water.  Her blood was normal. The total body xray showed a hazy part on her lung.  She said she had a heart murmur. Two days ago she wouldn't eat anything & yesterday she stopped rinking water. She was panting and breathing very heavy.  Our vet had given her a Vetalog injection a couple of days ago & she said would last two days. She started to eat a little & then yesterday she just lay down & wouldn't eat or drink We took her to the ER who said she had heart failure. They gave her Lasix but it didn't help so we had to put her down. Do you think she got heart failure from the Vetalog? We're just sick about this.

Answer
I think it was just her time to go, Joyce. One of the wonderful lessons our animals teach us is about living lives fully, then dying with grace. She is now onto her next fun adventure, whatever that is.

When a cat gets very sick in such a short time, it does not really matter if you are doing conventional drugs or holistic methods. Sometimes they turn around and sometimes they die. Since the heart murmer was there before the vetalog I do not think it caused the worsening of the condition. I do not even think that starting holistic at that time would have turned the tide for your cat.

I apologize if you are too  much in grief to hear this, but I do want you to know there are a lot of options to help your dogs and cats live a long and healthy life. This cat did great to live to 16 as many are dying at 12-14 these days. My goal is to have cats do as well as they do at the Brighthaven sanctuary where they adopt cats who are 16 or older who have been abandonded.  They switch them to a raw meat diet, no vaccines and homeopathy and have a few live to 27 and 30. My last cat died at 17, so even with great care, some just will not live to 27.
