Question
Hi hope you can maybe help me while i am waiting to go to
the vet tomorrow regarding a possible problem with my 8
year old retrievers kidneys/liver. I know about chronic and
acute disease but just wanted to know whether it would be
possible if chewing and eating a stick could cause acute
kidney problems and if i should mention this to my vet. My
dogs urine sample was 'diluted' and have been advised to
take her for blood tests.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Answer
Unless the stick was coated with something that was toxic to dogs it is highly unlikely that it would cause a kidney problem. Kidney problems build up slowly and go mostly unnoticed until they reach a proportion where the body can no longer handle it.

In other words, kidney disease and malfunction are usually not detected until the kidneys have already lost about 70% of their functionality.

Chewing on sticks can cause gum/tooth trauma or even intestinal problems if they are swallowed but not kidney issues.
I do hope that she/he is okay and that the tests come out well.
