Dachshund back problems?

Question
Over the past year my 8 year old dachshund has had two seizures and I know from having a previous doxie that it is her back. From my previous experience we went through every route imaginable and in the end we lost him and I felt cruel to have made him go through as much instead of putting him to sleep sooner and saving him a lot of pain. I just couldn't let him go. Having said that, I am not ready to receive the same news from my vet with my current doxie so after the two seizures, she recovered and I did not take her for x-rays from fear of hearing the same news. She has not been in pain and has been herself. Honestly if I felt she was in pain, we would be there but it was just two times in the course of a year and after the mintue or two, she was fine. Now though she is almostly yawning but leaving her mouth opened too long like she is trying to shut it... almost exactly like if you were yawning but couldn't quite get it out. I would like to know if this could be part of a possible back problem maybe effecting her upper neck/spine. With my past doxie, this is where his back problems effected him and it came to a point that his face and neck were completely paralized and was told that eventally he would choke and not recover. Please let me know if you feel the same thing is happening?

Answer
I have never heard of seizures having to do with back problems. There is no connection from what I know. Seizures are a brain disorder not a spinal issue. Doxies have back issues because of the length of the spine and the breed.

The yawning problem could be from the seizures but again, there is no connection to the back. Now if her neck is bothering her, that could cause the jaw problems.

You are better off getting the dog to the vet instead of playing out old fears from your last dog. You express a regret of not doing something sooner for him yet you are doing the same thing for your current dog.

Has your dog been seen for the seizures at all? Two seizures in 8 yrs isn't very many and doesn't normally warrant any medication but we have seen Doxies with jaw problems from bad teeth also.

They have very thin jaw bones and if their teeth are neglected it is easy for them to lose a lot of bone and thus cause fractures in their jaws.

I am not saying this is the problem but you do need to set aside the past and take this dog into the vets and have her looked over well and have her mouth examined as well. Only then will you know what is going on and can give her the best care as her owner.

I know you will do the right thing by her.
