adopting a dog that has been separated from sibling

Question
We just adopted a dog that is 3 years old and has been with another dog for the same period of time.  She was spayed before they let us adopt her of course and she cries and seems so sad and confused.  We don't know if it is because she misses her partner or because of the new home or the surgery.  Should we adopt her partner also or will she get over it eventually?

Answer
She is probably crying from two of the three reasons: being separated and from the new environment. If you can have two dogs it is always good to have two of them together. Being with a sibling for that long really gets them attached. Somehow they just "know" that they are siblings.

However, given time and a lot of good training and attention, she will get over it. It's up to you and your resources whether or not you can have them both. You will have two happy dogs now if you do and one happy dog later if you don't.

If it were me and I could, I would certainly get the other dog. :-)
