Dogs and Cat Relocating from Thailand to Canada

25 10:09:25

Question
Hello.  We will be moving back to Canada form Thailand later this year.  We have three dogs and a cat.
What are the requirements on both ends (Thailand - the origin, and Canada - the destination).  What fees should we anticipate upon arrival in Canada?
Do you recommend hiring a cargo service to help us with the paper work here in Thailand?
Thank you so very much for your service and time.

Answer
Dear Leah
Thanks much for the opportunity to offer some assistance!
What major city (airport) will you be arriving at in
Canada?  Will you be departing Bangkok?  What airline will
you use?  What size dogs do you have?
First, it will be MUCH cheaper to bring pets as excess
baggage.  You would get the necessary info from the
passenger-reservation people of the airline you will travel
on.  Cargo will be MUCH more expensive, but may be necessary
The airline in Thailand will advise you of any export
paperwork you might require.  In Canada, there may be
customs fees and/or airline clearance fees.  Usually these
are MUCH less, if any, if pets arrive as ex bag.
You should only need a health cert issued within 10 days of
departure.  Also, most important, rabies cert and vaccination given at least 30 days and less than 1 year at
time of departure.  I know into USA this would be all, and
I do not think Canada will be different.  If you have some
way to contact Canadian customs in advance, do so for up to
date info.
I should NOT think you would need a shipper in Thailand.
They will be VERY expensive.
Provide me with more specifics of your move, then I can be
more specific in my advice.
Sincerely,  Jerry Mishler
