Moving dog - UK to Ghana, Africa

Question
Moving to Ghana and really want to take our dog with us from the UK.  Don't want to leave him behind as it may mean re-homing which would be devastating.  What do I need to do?

Answer
Dear Helen
This should be no problem, but will take some time and paperwork
My latest info indicates Ghana requires an import permit, and, blood
tests for at least 5 diseases and several vaccinations.
At this point, best to contact Ghana embassy or consulate for update.
If they are not helpful, you may need to contact a petshipper there
in UK.  Visit:  www.ipata.com   These will be very expensive, however.  Try to do this on your own if you can
British Air has direct flights to Accra from Heathrow.  If you fly
you may be able to take the dog as excess baggage as opposed to cargo.  They fly in the same part of the plane, but is much cheaper
and the dog would clear customs with you.  Contrary to what you might
hear, the cargo area is perfectly safe. Thousands of pets fly everyday all over the world with absolutely NO problems.
Ghana airways also have flights from Gatwick.  If you can get a
better price for tickets for yourself, go this way.  If the dog is
with you on Ghana airways, no problem.  However, do NOT send the dog
alone on Ghana airways.  British air would be very fine.
Only the airlines there in UK can tell you how much this will cost.
Much depends upon size of shipping kennel you require.  At this point
I have no idea what kind of dog you have.
Hope this helps, and keep in touch
