fish-only filtration

Question
Scott,
Thanks for your input. I am confused, what are canister filters used for? Do all reef/fish tanks need a sump/refridgerum? I currently have a 75g RR Oceanic with sump. My next project I was hoping to get away from sump; maybe not. Thanks a ton for your understanding in my lack of knowledge!!! JEFF

Question -
Can a protein skimmer be used "inline"? I would prefer to not have a sump or hang-on with my next tank. I am thinking about doing a 240g fish-only. Thanks----Jeff
Answer -
Jeff,
The only protein skimmer available are going to installed into a wet/dry filter (sump or hang on) or are independent hand on units.

Best of luck with your tank.

Answer
Jeff,
Canister filters are designed for different purposes depending on which manufacturer you are looking at.  In general they are used for mechanical and chemical filtration.

Not all marine aquariums need sump or refugium filtration systems.  However, in your case, a wet/dry (sump) filter is going to be the most efficient and cost effect way to filter the tank.  Especially since the tank is a Reef Ready aquarium.  It was designed for use with a sump filter.

Best of luck with your tank!
